PHOENIX — University of Arizona men's basketball coach Lute Olson has been ordered to appear in a Tucson court May 7.

Olson, 73, was ordered to appear before Judge Sarah Simmons of Pima County Superior Court after he transferred money into his personal account from a joint account with his estranged wife Christine, court records show.

The transfer of funds from a Charles Schwab account came to light earlier this month, court records said.

Olson was accused of moving the money Dec. 7, a day after he filed for divorce from Christine Olson and the same day he asked the University of Arizona for an indefinite leave of absence.

The amount of the transfer was not disclosed, and the transfer apparently occurred because payments from athletic shoe maker Nike were being made to the joint account, court records show.

According to the most recent figure available, Olson received $500,000 from Nike in 2006-07, as part of the $714,000 in outside income he receives, according to the University of Arizona. Olson also receives a base salary of nearly $738,000 from the university.

Christine Olson's attorney Kathleen McCarthy wrote in a court pleading that the coach's conduct was obviously intentional calling it outrageous.

McCarthy wrote that a preliminary injunction barred each side from transferring any joint, common or community property.

Calls to Olson who was recruiting, and to his attorney, were not returned.

A spokesman for Christine Olson said the pleadings speak for themselves.

The veteran coach first took a leave of absence Nov. 4 when he said he needed to take care of a personal matter that needed his undivided attention. A month later, Olson said he needed the leave to deal with a medical condition that was not life-threatening. He has not disclosed the personal matter or medical condition.

During a contentious news conference with reporters earlier this month, Olson said he was excited to return to coaching.
