Napolitano vetoes property tax repeal bill

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano has vetoed a bill passed by the Legislature to repeal a suspended state property tax.
Napolitano told reporters she decided to veto the bill because she concluded that it’s untimely, untenable and unwise.
She also accused repeal supporters of failing to take into account the state’s budget troubles and suggested the repeal could hurt education.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Jim Waring (“wearing”) says the veto exposes Napolitano’s reputation as a tax-cutter as a myth.
The so-called “equalization” property tax was suspended in 2006 for three years, but business lobbies and homeowners advocates wanted it repealed outright to keep it from coming back in 2009.
Repeal supporters said letting the tax return would amount to a tax increase.
