An employee who worked in the Tucson Police Department’s crime lab for more than 20 years has resigned amid an investigation that determined he mishandled evidence in six criminal cases.
Steven Skowron, 49, resigned Thursday after the department decided that he should be terminated as a result of his actions, according to a Tucson Police Department news release.
The department declined to elaborate on the types of cases that were mishandled, although it did say that the incidents occurred between December 2004 and January 2006.
Officials also declined to say how the cases were mishandled.
The internal investigation began Feb. 27 when the department’s crime laboratory superintendent raised concerns regarding some procedural irregularities, the release said.
Skowron, who was the crime laboratory coordinator at the time, conducted latent fingerprint testing.
The results of the internal investigation have been presented to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review of possible criminal charges.
No further information was available Friday afternoon.
