Forty elementary school teachers within the Tucson Unified School District may be laid off.
TUSD officials released the list of teachers this afternoon. Letters were hand-delivered to the teachers by their principals at 27 schools, according to a TUSD press release.
The move is the first step toward the elimination of jobs forced by the loss of federal funds and a projected budget deficit of $20 million for the 2008-09 school year.
TUSD’s Governing Board will vote on the lay-offs at its April 8 meeting.
District officials said they anticipate rehiring many of the teachers, who are in their first year with the district, because of retirements and resignations. But the teachers’ contracts requires the district notify employees of lay-offs before April 15, even though that’s before officials know how many retirements and resignations will occur, and if the district’s plan to close four elementary schools will be approved.
