Border Patrol agents discovered a pair of horses, two handguns and eight illegal entrants last Thursday during a traffic stop near Douglas.
Over the weekend, the agency also arrested two convicted sex offenders.
Agents spotted a GMC pickup truck hauling a horse trailer on Thursday at about 4:30 p.m. on Arizona 191 near Douglas that matched a description given by a caller who said it appeared to have picked up a group of illegal entrants, said Mike Scioli, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman.
Agents stopped the truck and found three illegal entrants in the cab and five others inside the horse track compartment of the trailer, he said. They found two loaded handguns behind the rear seat in the cab of the truck and two miniature horses in the trailer, Scioli said.
The man driving the truck is U.S. legal permanent resident and will be prosecuted for alien smuggling and endangerment because the five were locked in the trailer compartment with no way to get out, he said.
The three in the cab and two in the compartment were adult men from Mexico. The other three in the compartment were minor boys under the age of 14 from Mexico, Scioli said.
All of them were processed and voluntarily returned to Mexico.
The vehicle, trailer, handguns and two horses that were in the trailer were seized by the Border Patrol. The miniature horses will likely be handed over to the State of Arizona, Scioli said.
On Saturday in downtown Nogales, agents working on bike patrol apprehended a 32-year-old man from Guanajuato, Mexico, who had been convicted of having sex with a minor under 18 and sentenced to three years in prison in Salinas County, Calif., in 2002, Scioli said.
On Sunday near Ajo, agents arrested a 22-year-old man, also from Guanajuato, Mexico, who had been convicted of criminal sexual abuse of a minor and sentenced to one year in prison in 2002 in Elgin, Ill., Scioli said. He was a member of the Norteño 14th Street gang from 2001-2003.
Both men were set up for formal removal proceedings.
