PHOENIX — Investigators are trying to determine whether the killings of five men in western Maricopa County over the last four weeks were related to immigrant or drug smuggling, officials said Monday.
In one case, two men were found burned to death a week ago in the trunk of a car. In the remaining three cases, each of the victims was found dumped in the desert, including one man who had been bound.
"I have been saying all along, even though others say no, that this illegal activity breeds violence," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Five years ago, Arpaio's office investigated the killings of nine people whose bodies were dumped in remote areas of the county.
Investigators had believed the eight victims may have been kidnapped for ransom or could have been migrant smugglers who infringed on the turf of drug smugglers or vice versa. No arrests were made in those eight cases.
