PHOENIX — An internal investigation has been launched into allegations of academic fraud and improper recruiting against Arizona State University's top ranked baseball team.
Coach Pat Murphy acknowledged the investigation Monday and said he believes it will not result in sanctions.
Murphy, in his 14th year as ASU coach, also disputed rumors that a large number of ASU players will be suspended. Murphy said he expects the investigation to be concluded soon.
"We're not perfect," Murphy said in a statement. "We strive to the highest standards in our program. Any investigation of any program in Division I may show minor hiccups from time to time, none with intent or adding any advantage and most of which would be clerical or administrative error.
"I can't speak to why people choose to do this or try to take a program down. I support the university and athletic department in doing their due diligence. They are right in looking into any and all accusations. You will clearly see what we are all about. My only fear is people won't notice or remember the result. Too often investigation means we did something wrong, and that's not the case. I hope people pay attention and look for the final outcome."
The investigation was launched in January. ASU hired an Indianapolis-based legal firm to investigate charges that also include improper use of training at Athletes' Performance in Tempe and violations relating to players working for Murphy's nonprofit PTM Programs for Youth.
Part of the investigation includes the eligibility case of pitcher Jason Jarvis. Jarvis regained his eligibility over the weekend until his appeal of a grade lowering for an online class is heard.
Virgil Renzulli, ASU vice president for public affairs, confirmed that an investigation was under way but could not discuss details. "We always err on the side of caution," Renzulli said. "Some of the stuff we're hearing on the street is not accurate."
ASU is ranked No. 1 nationally. The Sun Devils began the season 3-0 with one-sided victories over No. 6 Vanderbilt and No. 11 Oregon State.
