Suspected smugglers jumped out of a moving dump truck filled with illegal entrants on a Douglas street Monday. A Border Patrol agent ran it down, jumped on board and brought the vehicle to a halt.
The incident occurred Monday just before 9 a.m. in Douglas on 18th Street, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Agents were trying to stop a dump truck when the driver and a passenger jumped out of the moving vehicle and ran away, the release said. The dump truck continued westbound and the agent chased it until he was able to jump into the cab and stop the vehicle.
In the bucket of the truck, the agent found 22 males and one female, all of whom were Mexican nationals. None were injured.
Agents were able to track down and arrest the two who bailed from the dump truck, the release said.
The group was voluntarily returned to Mexico and the two smugglers are being held.
In an incident Feb. 12, a Border Patrol agent pulled over a Chevrolet Suburban on Interstate 10 near Benson, but after the agent left his vehicle the SUV took off, the release said. As the SUV re-entered morning traffic, the driver and his front seat passenger jumped out and ran away, leaving five men and one woman inside, the release said.
The agent ran after the SUV but was unable to catch it, so he got into his vehicle, activated his lights and siren to warn other motorists of the potential danger and re-directed the SUV to the shoulder of the road, the release said.
No injuries were reported and the two who ran were not caught.
