PHOENIX — In an attempt to balance education with entertainment, the Arizona Science Center in downtown Phoenix is raising money for a $25 million transformation from floor to ceiling.
Hoping to add some theme-park pizazz, the 25-year-old museum is adding two new galleries, including one called the Forces of Nature.
The new gallery opens in April and features moving floors that simulate wind, rain and heat, museum officials said.
So far, the Arizona Science Center has raised more than $14.6 million from private donors to pay for the upgrades.
Another $5.2 million in 2006 city bond money is expected to pay for other building upgrades such as a new visitor's center and better access for buses.
If it's going to survive and compete, the institution must balance traditional exhibits with the wow factor, said Chevy Humphrey, president and chief executive of the Arizona Science Center.
Across the nation, "science centers are at a crossroads," she said.
