PRESCOTT — Prescott police shot a suspect who they say punched an officer in the face and fired a gun at multiple officers, hitting one in his bulletproof vest.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was shot in the torso area Tuesday afternoon, but the injury does not appear life-threatening, Lt. Ken Morley said.
He said the officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury and that his protective vest stopped the bullet.
The shooting began after officers investigating a drug-related crime pulled over a car, and became suspicious when the “uncooperative” suspect wouldn’t take his hands away from his chest, Morley said.
He said when one officer tried to pat him down, the man punched him in the face and then ran into an open field.
Morley said the man ignored officers’ commands, and drew his gun and fired at the officers multiple times. Officers returned fire, and the man was hit.
He was taken to Yavapai Regional Medical Center.
