Two illegal entrants shot near Tubac in drug load ripoff

Two illegal entrants were injured by gunfire in a drug ripoff by border bandits west of Tubac early Saturday as they and seven others smuggled marijuana in to the United States, an official said.
Nine illegal border crossers, eight of whom were hauling backpacks loaded with 50 pounds of marijuana, were trekking through Puerto Canyon when two or three armed men confronted them about 3 a.m., said Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada.
The bandits yelled at the smugglers in Spanish and told them to drop their load and run, Estrada said. They fired guns into the air as they yelled, he said.
“(The smugglers) dropped the bundles and they fled, however the individuals continued to fire,” Estrada said.
One of the illegal entrants, Jose Octavio Portillo, 23, of Nogales, Sonora, was shot in the forearm, Estrada said.
He was treated at University Medical Center after he and two others called 911 from a pay phone in Tubac.
The Border Patrol was called and located five other smugglers, one who had been grazed by a bullet, after an extensive ground search, Estrada said.
Their guide was never found. Authorities weren’t able to track down the bandits or find any marijuana, Estrada said.
Because of that the smugglers did not face drug charges and were returned to Mexico, he said.
Estrada said the area west of Tubac was used frequently by drug smugglers in 2005 and 2006, but traffic through the corridor decreased in 2007 with increased Border Patrol enforcement.
