PHOENIX – The Maricopa County Sheriff's office raided a Phoenix home and detained 20 people, five of which are believed to be smugglers.
The suspected smugglers are accused of violently mistreating the other immigrants.
"They were pistol whipped and abused for the last three days," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Monday evening.
The Sheriff's office plans to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to further investigate what took place at the residence and to determine if any charges will be filed, Arpaio said.
"There is violence involved with immigration," Arpaio said. "It shows that I'm not just locking up gardeners and restaurant workers like everyone says I am."
