After nearly a year-long wait, Diane Humetewa was confirmed late Thursday by the U.S. Senate as Arizona's next U.S. Attorney.
She will be the first Native American woman to serve as a U.S. Attorney. Humetewa has been with the state's U.S. Attorney's Office since 1987, serving first as a victim right's advocate. She graduated from Arizona State University's College of Law in 1993.
She was recommended by U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl and Sen. John McCain earlier in the year, but President George Bush only recently nominated her.
“I congratulate Diane Humetewa on her confirmation today as the new U.S. Attorney for Arizona,” Kyl said in a statement. “Her background as a prosecutor, crime-victims advocate, and years of public service made her an outstanding nominee and will serve her well in this important position.”
