University of Arizona Basketball Coach Lute Olson filed for divorce Thursday against his wife of four years, Christine.
Although the details of the divorce are not public, a receipt filed in Superior Court shows Olson paid the filing fee of $216, according to the receipt obtained this morning by the Star.
Leonard Karp, who represents Lute Olson in the proceedings, confirmed the divorce filing. The “marriage is irrevocably broken and there is no reasonable prospect of reconciliation,” Karp said.
The filing in Pima County Superior Court came on the same day Olson notified UA President Robert Shelton and Athletic Director Jim Livengood he would extend his leave for the remainder of this basketball season.
Christine Olson was served with the divorce papers Thursday while in New York for meetings associated with her position as the Republican National Committee woman of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The Olsons, who married in Las Vegas in 2003, were scheduled to meet in Chicago today but upon being served, Christine headed back to Tucson. Upon her arrival she issued a statement saying she is "personally devastated" and will remain committed to her marriage.
Lute Olson hopes that any issues can be resolved amicably, Karp said. Both parties signed a prenuptial agreement, Karp said.
If Christine Olson opts not to contest the divorce, it would not become final for 61 days, Karp said.
Olson said Thursday he needed the additional time off to deal with a “personal situation.” Olson, 73, said he still plans to coach next season and asked fans for patience. He began his leave of absence Nov. 4, leaving the program in the hands of veteran assistant Kevin O'Neill.
"Our family has been struggling through a difficult and private matter for some months now," Christine Olson said in her statement. "It was our hope that during my husband's temporary leave of absence, we would be able to focus on our family and successfully address this matter. Unfortunately, it seems that my husband has reached a decision that he is unable to continue our relationship together during this difficult time."
Olson's first wife Bobbi died of cancer in 2001.
