PHOENIX – Although light-rail in the greater Phoenix area is still a year away, drivers will see trains running on tracks.
For the first time some drivers will experience what it's going to be like commuting while light-rail trains are moving.
A test is scheduled Monday with trains moving along tracks from 44th Street in east Phoenix to Priest Drive in Tempe, Metro light rail said.
Previously when trains ran on the tracks for testing, police have always been present to stop traffic or control intersections to make sure that no one crossed while the trains were moving.
Now, traffic signals will alert motorists when a train is approaching.
A green arrow tells people when it is OK to turn left or to make a U-turn, Metro said.
Train operators obey their own set of signals, but operators of Metro rail say much of the safety will fall on the shoulders of drivers.
"We've designed safety into the system as much as possible," said Larry Engleman, Metro light rail's director of safety.
"But the reality is that a light-rail train traveling 35 mph has a stopping distance of 200 feet."
When light-rail construction is finally finished, there will be new signals at 148 intersections along the metro Phoenix route.
