A Mexican man was arrested Tuesday in connection with an attempt to smuggle more than $480,000 of undeclared U.S. currency into Mexico, an official said.
The 38-year-old man from Nogales, Sonora, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation and prosecution on charges of bulk cash smuggling, said Brian Levin, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman.
Levin could not say why the man — who was in the country legally and had a border crossing card — tried to take the money from the United States into Mexico. Taking money across the international border isn’t illegal, he said, but it is if a person doesn’t declare it.
“We suspect it was proceeds from some illicit activity in the United States, but we don’t know exactly what,” he said.
The man, whose name wasn’t released, was driving a Buick Park Avenue and during an outbound inspection about 2:30 p.m., a Customs and Border Protection officer became suspicious of the man’s behavior and answers, according to a press release.
Officers found bundles of cash in boxes and containers in the back seat, Levin said. The $484,750 cash was mingled with other items.
