The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says 2,000 illegal immigrants are on criminal probation in the county and it wants them off the streets and in custody.
Deputy Chief Brian Sands says the sheriff’s office is working with federal immigration authorities to organize a massive operation to do just that.
Sands says federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been trying to address the issue for years but that the federal agency lacks the manpower.
In Sands’ words, “We’d like to get these people out of our community.”
The state is giving Maricopa an additional $634,000 to hire five deputies and purchase two vans for immigration-related enforcement.
