A plea deal for a former Salpointe teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student is expected to result in probation when she’s sentenced next month.
Rebecca Lee Kelley, 24, pleaded guilty Monday to one count of failure to report a reportable offense and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, said her attorney, Stephen Weiss.
Sentencing in the case is scheduled for Nov. 13 and Weiss said he expects Kelley will be put on probation for all counts, with the agreement calling for the maximum three years. Kelley’s plea also calls for restitution, capped at $10,000, to pay for counseling for the boy and his mother.
Kelley originally was indicted on four counts of sexual conduct with a minor under 18 and a conviction would have meant mandatory prison time and required her register as a sex offender, Weiss said.
With the plea, the felony for failure to report a reportable offense can be designated as a misdemeanor by the judge at the end of probation, Weiss said.
Kelley was indicted in April, after administrators at Salpointe Catholic High School contacted police when they learned she might be having a sexual relationship with the boy.
Kelley started teaching at Salpointe in spring 2005 as a student teacher and was hired to teach literature full-time in May 2005.
