Former Salpointe player wins start in USC's football opener

Former Salpointe Catholic football player Kris O'Dowd will become the first true freshman ever to start at center when USC takes on Idaho Saturday.
The 6-foot-5, 300-pound O'Dowd took nearly all of the first-team snaps on Thursday in the Trojans' final full practice before Saturday's opener against Idaho.
O'Dowd was working as the backup for Matt Spanos, who tore his right triceps and will be out for four weeks.
USC quarterback John David Booty told the Los Angeles Times he was comfortable with O'Dowd. "He's got to step up but from what I've seen and the way we're handling snaps, everything seems to be running smooth," Booty said.
The last true freshman to start an opener on the offensive line was guard Travis Claridge against Penn State in 1996, according to USC officials.
O'Dowd's dad, Charlie O'Dowd told the Star Friday morning that the family has known for a couple of days their son would start.
"I talked with him last night and he's very excited," Charlie said. "Kris' speed has increased and a lot stronger because he's been working out and lifting with the seniors all summer."
Kris took eight units of summer school and got a 4.0, his dad said.
