$50,000 grant to help Phoenix day labor center

PHOENIX - A $50,000 grant from a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit will help keep a financially troubled day-labor center in Phoenix afloat. For now.
The Public Welfare Foundation grant will help pay the operating costs for the Macehualli Work Center through August.
Salvador Reza of Tonatierra, the nonprofit that runs the center, said the Public Welfare Foundation tries "to fund projects that they believe are making a difference in the community."
"They saw that we're making a difference in the Palomino neighborhood," he said.
The center was set up in 2003 to provide a safe place for workers and those who hire them – a move criticized by opponents of illegal immigration.
Dozens of day laborers use the center daily to get jobs in construction, landscaping and housecleaning.
