A 55-year-old woman was jailed this morning after officials say she ran over
her roommate with a pickup truck during an overnight domestic dispute.
Linda D. Giles was being held at the Pima County jail on suspicion of second
degree murder.
The 85-year-old victim, James P. Carafas, was found in the driveway of his
home in the 5000 block of East Placita Salud, near North Swan Road and East
Sunrise Drive, soon after deputies were called to the residence just after
midnight by a man staying with the pair. The guest told deputies Giles and
the victim had been arguing, according to Deputy Dawn Barkman, a spokeswoman
for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
The guest said he had left the house for a short period and returned to find
signs of a physical altercation, including items throughout the house that
had been overturned, Barkman said.
According to the witness, Barkman said, Giles and the Carafas continued
their argument outside the home. He said he heard Giles start the truck, a
white 2000 Ford F150, followed by a commotion.
The guest went outside, found the victim and called 911.
Giles, who had left the residence, returned by the time deputies arrived
Friday morning. Deputies found evidence in the house that supported the
witness’s statement, Barkman said.
Giles and the victim were friends who lived in the residence together for
several years, Barkman said.
