Judge fines ex-Cat Adams for tardiness

Former UA basketball star Hassan Adams was fined $100 for showing up 55 minutes late to the second day of his DUI trial at Tucson City Court, delaying testimony regarding his breathalyzer test.
Judge Margarita Bernal, who ordered Adams to pay the fine to a charity of his choice within 30 days, asked Adams why he didn't call earlier to explain he was running behind schedule. Adams said he called his attorney and told her he was late because of "his ride."
"Are you not taking this seriously, sir?" Bernal asked him.
The trial, scheduled to re-start at 8:30, went forward at 9:25 a.m. with testimony from Tucson police officer Fredeberto Pedrego about the breathalyzer test he gave Adams.
Pedrego said he gave Adams two tests, then disregarded the first one because the second one did not register properly because of interference, and then waited 15 minutes before testing again. Adams registered blood-alcohol levels of 0.121 and 0.124 on the two tests, according to the Tucson Police Report.
Pedrego said Adams had a slight "body sway" and that Adams complained the breathalyzer was hard to blow into.
"I knew he was an athlete, and I've seen elderly people do it," Pedrego said. "I told him he shouldn't have a problem."
The defense then brought the first of three witnesses, toxicology expert Marc Stottman, who dissected all the problems breathalyzers could have in relaying estimated blood-alcohol levels. He said Adams could have had a BAC as low as 0.06 if enough variables had come into play.
The defense was scheduled to bring forward two more witnesses this afternoon.
