MESA – Republican Representative Russell Pearce is not known for being soft-spoken on the illegal immigration issue.
But his latest interview on a Phoenix radio station has really turned some heads.
During an interview on ''Morning Edition'' on KJZZ, 91.5 FM, Pearce said he would support bringing back a controversial program dubbed ''Operation Wetback.''
The program called for the mass deportation of illegal immigrants in the mid 1950s.
Hispanic community leader Roberto Reveles called the comments ''outrageous'' and says Pearce's support of such a policy shows his fear and loathing of illegal immigrants.
Pearce defended his comments, accusing immigration activists of supporting ''lawbreakers.
In reference to using the term ''wetback,'' Pearce says he was saying it in a historical context.
