Drug dog's discovery: 56 pounds of cocaine

Border Patrol agents seized 56 pounds of cocaine Thursday during a routine vehicle inspection near Arivaca, an official said Friday.
The cocaine has an estimated street value of more than $1.5 million.
The discovery was made at a rest stop on Interstate 19, said Agent Gustavo Soto, a spokesman for the agency's Tucson sector.
Border Patrol agents were assisting the Arizona Department of Transportation with commercial vehicle inspections when a 2001 Dodge Neon drove into one of the inspection lanes. A Border Patrol drug-detecting dog alerted its handler to the presence of drugs in the car, Soto said.
The owner of the car consented to having his vehicle searched, which yielded a small amount of marijuana, several small bags of methamphetamines and a false compartment where 22 bricks of cocaine were being stored.
The two men in the car, both of whom are Mexican nationals, were arrested and are now in the custody of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Soto said.
The immigration status of the men was not known.
