Gov. Janet Napolitano says approximately 1,200 guard troops are now deployed along the Arizona-Mexico border and that the figure is expected to rise to 2,000 within a few weeks.
The governor says up to 2,400 Guard troops of the 6,000 to be deployed along the U.S. border with Mexico will be in Arizona.
Napolitano also says approximately two-thirds of the states have now signed agreements to participate in the National Guard deployment authorized by President Bush.
The guard personnel are being used to augment the Border Patrol until more agents are hired and trained. The troops are being used in support roles and not in direct enforcement against illegal immigration or smuggling of contraband.
