PHOENIX - Gov. Janet Napolitano on Thursday signed a bill that will allow wineries in Arizona and other states to ship wine ordered by phone, mail, fax or the Internet directly to Arizona consumers.
Arizona law currently allows direct shipments if the purchaser is physically present at the winery.
Under the new law, any U.S. winery would have to have an Arizona license to ship wine to Arizonans.
The legislation follows a 2005 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down state laws in New York and Michigan that prohibited direct purchases from out-of-state vineyards.
Arizona was among 24 states with laws barring interstate shipments.
