Catalina Foothills High School came out on top in the Arizona Scholastic State Chess Championship. The team, which recently placed second in a separate national competition, beat out players from across the state at a two-day tournament over the weekend in Gilbert.
Vaishnav Aradhyula of Catalina Foothills won first place overall in the individual high school event and will represent Arizona this summer at a tournament in Chicago.
Salpointe Catholic High School sophomore Jonathan Cox won third place overall.

In the sixth through ninth grade competition, Kevin Zhang of Esperero Canyon Middle School won first place and Ashutosh Thakur of Doolen Middle School won second.
In the kindergarten through third grade category, Kohta Isoe of Lineweaver Elementary School came in first, defeating one of the country's top players.
In the team competitions, St. Gregory College Preparatory and Esperero Canyon tied for first place in the middle school category. In the kindergarten through fifth grade category, Castlehill Country Day School won first, followed by Sam Hughes Elementary School in second and Manzanita Elementary School in third.
In the kindergarten through third grade category, Castlehill was first, followed by Canyon View Elementary School in second and Lineweaver Elementary School in third.
