The Bisbee High School wrestling team will not compete in this weekend's
Douglas Invitational due to health concerns after one of the team's
wrestlers was exposed to staph bacteria during a meet in Safford two
weeks ago.
Bisbee Athletic Director Walter Edge said the school's wrestlers have been
cleared by a doctor but were asked not to attend the meet because Douglas
feared liability concerns if the infection spread.
"All the doctors and everyone else said we were OK (to compete)," Edge said.
"But if the shoe was on the other foot, I'd probably do the same thing.
"If you get it, its a bad deal. From what I understand, there is more than one
strain of it."
Staph infections are caused by a Staphylococcus bacteria, and can result in
everything from lesions and boils to eventual death. Bisbee's team was
exposed to Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a
more-dangerous strain that resists common antibiotics.
