PHOENIX — After scrubbing and superchlorinating all city pools, Phoenix is slowly and cautiously reopening them.
The city said it has reopened 14 of the 29 public pools that were shut down earlier this week because of an intestinal-parasite outbreak.
The first 11 pools opened at noon Friday after city workers spent days hyperchlorinating, and backwashing to clear each pool of any possibility of cryptosporidium.
Health officials said cryptosporidium is spread through feces and causes diarrhea.
Pecos Pool in Ahwatukee, Maryvale Pool and Telephone Pioneer Pool are expected to open with the approval of Maricopa County health officials.
City officials said they believe an accidental bowel movement likely caused contaminations earlier this week at Starlight Park and Marivue pools in west Phoenix.
The contaminations sickened nearly 60 people, though only two people have confirmed cases of cryptosporidiosis, officials said.
