Golf's top 64 players are trickling into Southern Arizona, a practice round at a time.
Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and a few dozen others arrived at The Gallery Golf Club, South Course today to prepare for the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
Woods' first-round opponent, J.B. Holmes, was set to tee off around 3 p.m. Holmes said today that he expects to be a certain underdog against the world's top player, but won't sell himself short.
Holmes is already feeling fortunate: He won the FBR Open earlier this month in Phoenix, and snuck into Match Play as a No. 64 seed when Brett Wetterich withdrew because of a bad back.
"It's just Match Play. You have to look at it as any other match. You're playing the best player in the world, so you've got to go out and stick to your game," he said. "I've got to keep playing the way I've been; that's what's got me here, so I can't veer off the track."
The world's No. 1 golfer made his appearance shortly after 11 a.m. today, driving ball after ball into the clear desert air alongside a dozen other players. He walked to the No. 1 teebox around 11:30, taking most of the surrounding fans with him.
Woods, wearing a pale green Nike shirt, drove his first tee shot down the middle of the fairway. Practice rounds continue today and Tuesday. The first round of the 64-player tournament begins Wednesday.
