Yes, we're talking about practice. But this is different.
The world's top 64 golfers are in Southern Arizona today to prepare for this week's WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
They'll cram onto The Gallery Golf Club at Dove Mountain's South Course driving range, launching blast after blast into the forgiving desert air. They'll agonize over putts on the pristine practice green. They'll even test-drive the course with a practice round or two.
The golfers know what's at stake.
The Match Play winner will take home $1.35 million and vault up the FedEx Cup standings and the World Golf Rankings.
He will also have the satisfaction of defeating the world's top golfers. This year's pool includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk and — after weeks of hemming and hawing — Ernie Els.
Three of golf's most fascinating and polarizing players — Vijay Singh, Rory Sabbatini and Colin Montgomerie — will also play The Gallery.
Each player, from the top-seeded Woods to No. 64 J.B. Holmes, must be on his game.
Match Play is a single-elimination tournament that begins with 32 first-round matches on Wednesday and concludes with a 36-hole super-final on Sunday. In between, you'll read about literally hundreds of numbers. Here are 10 to get you started.
