How do we rank them?

Rankings in the Star 200 are based on full-time equivalent jobs to make comparisons meaningful.

Firms were asked to report the number of full-time and part-time employees, and the hours they worked, as of Dec. 31, 2007. Thus, two employees reported working 20 hours each per week is one FTE job.

Firms listed with an asterisk (*) are those for which job totals were estimated based on the best available information. We verify survey responses, but each year we publish some numbers that later prove incorrect. Those listed with a † have explanations or corrections on page 14.

*Indicates estimated job totals. †Indicates details below.

Corrections

• Wells Fargo: In the past three editions of Star 200, the count included all employees in Wells Fargo's "greater Arizona" market area, which includes areas outside Southern Arizona. This year's count of 567 full-time equivalent jobs brings the count in line with numbers from the 2004 edition and earlier editions.

• Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa: This year's tally of 550 full-time equivalent jobs includes the resort's golf staff, which the company unintentionally omitted last year.

• Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind: Last year's number was higher than the actual count of workers at the school. This year's count of 367 full-time equivalent jobs is in line with previous years.

• Headcount vs. FTE count: The Arizona Air National Guard, Catalina Foothills School District, Flowing Wells School District, Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, Miraval Holding LLC and Pizza Hut of Arizona Inc. previously reported a headcount of employees, not a full-time equivalent calculation. This year's number correctly accounts for part-time employees.

Explanations

• U.S. Army Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca: Last year, the Star 200 stopped including contractors who work on the military bases. This year, the fort chose not to include seasonal students in its count of employees.

• Tohono O'odham Nation and Pascua Yaqui Tribe: For the first time, the Star 200 includes separate counts for the tribes and the casinos they operate.

• IBM: The company's employee count no longer includes contractors, who may work alongside the IBM staff in Tucson but who technically are employees of other firms.

• Brinker International Inc.: Last year's count included only the restaurant chain's Chili's Grill & Bar brand locations. This year is a more complete roundup of the company's employees at restaurants including Chili's, Romano's Macaroni Grill and On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina.

• Marriott International Inc.: Last year's count included only the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa. This year, employees of other corporate-owned Marriott hotels in Southern Arizona are included.
