'Roads to Yuma' symposium 'Star Trek: The Exhibition'Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.11.2009
Days are lengthening. The weather is (mostly) great. Time to schedule a little sightseeing around the state.
● On Saturday, the Oregon-California Trails Association is hosting a "Roads to Yuma" symposium at the Shilo Inn Hotel, 1550 S. Castle Dome Ave. in Yuma. Its focus: the many historic routes that over the centuries have converged on the area that history buffs call Yuma Crossing.
Story characters include Spanish explorers, U.S. Army troopers, Civil War spies, California gold seekers and people from all around the world looking for opportunities for better lives.
There will be knowledgeable speakers and guided tours of Yuma's historic sites.
For more information and to register, go to www.octa-trails.org or call toll free 1-888-811-6282. Contact the Yuma Visitors Bureau, 1-800-293-0071, for information on hotels.
● "Star Trek" fans can indulge big-time nostalgia at "Star Trek: The Exhibition" in Phoenix.
The featured exhibit, at the Arizona Science Center, 600 E. Washington St., runs daily through May 10, two days after the latest "Star Trek" movie is slated to open.
"Star Trek" has entertained viewers via TV and movies for more than 40 years, so there's a lot — 12,500 square feet of iconic memorabilia — to see.
There are re-creations, sets, costumes and props from the five television series and 10 films.
The museum is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., but because of the time needed to see this "Star Trek" show, visitors may not begin the tour after 3:45 p.m.
General admission is $20 for adults; $18 for children, allowing visitors to see all the science center's exhibits. For more information, call 1-602-716-2000.
