PHOENIX — A California Supreme Court ruling overturning that state’s ban on same-sex marriages is providing ammunition for supporters of a proposed Arizona constitutional amendment on the subject.
With Thursday’s ruling, Center for Arizona Policy President Cathi Herrod is calling on Arizona Senate President Tim Bee to schedule a Senate vote on a resolution already approved by the state House.
Herrod says the California decision shows that voters need to put Arizona’s gay marriage ban in the state Constitution to avoid having it overturned by lawmakers or judges.
Bee is sponsoring a Senate version of the ban but won’t comment on prospects for a vote. He says legislative leaders still have to sift through various proposed ballot measures.
