Terry Souther has worked at a number of bars.
She worked at Twin Peaks Lounge, at Grant Road and Stone Avenue; at The Buckskin Bar, which gave way to the Tucson Mall; at Swing-In, on Wetmore Road and La Cholla Boulevard; and at two casino bars in Nevada.
What do all those bars have in common? They've all gone out of business.
The person who nominated Souther called her "kind of a bad luck jinx." She doesn't dispute it.
But there's one bar that appears Souther-proof.
Nevada Smith's has employed Souther for 18 years, on and off.
"I've done a couple of straight jobs," Souther says. "But I always come back to this because of the people."
Have you invented any drinks?
"I have one shot called 'Girl Talk.' We call it that because it makes all the girls talk. It's made with Smirnoff Black Cherry Vodka, cranberry juice and Red Bull."
Did you grow up in Tucson?
"I grew up on a ranch in Hereford. My parents still live there. They're getting ready to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary."
What are they going to do to celebrate?
"I think we're going to have a quiet barbecue at home for the family. I asked if they wanted to have a big party and they said no."
What was it like growing up on a ranch?
"We never went to the grocery store, except maybe to get soda. We had a milk cow and a vegetable garden and my mom would make her own bread."
Do you have a garden at your house now?
"No. I have a lot of flowers around my pool."
When did you move to Tucson?
"When I was 19. I wanted to go to the city and meet new people."
Are you an "American Idol" fan?
"No, but I'm a big fan of 'Dancing With the Stars.' I'm the biggest fan of that show. I've voted for the winners the past three seasons."
What kind of music do you like?
"I like R&B and hip-hop. I listen to Usher and Alicia Keys."
Are you going to see Keys when she performs at Centennial Hall on Sunday, Sept. 28?
"I really want to."
