A high-ranking official with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will be in Tucson this weekend to talk about the election season, voting and the Catholic conscience.
John Carr, secretary of the department of justice, peace and human development for the national bishops' conference, has titled his talk, "Faithful Citizenship: Dangers and Directions for the Catholic Voter."
Carr is expected to outline the mission of the Catholic Church in political life and the message of the U.S. Catholic Bishops' statement, titled "Faithful Citizenship."
The bishops say "Faithful Citizenship" is not meant to tell people how to vote, but to give Catholics "guiding values" on such issues as abortion as they decide for themselves how to vote.
Outside the church, Carr has served as executive director of the White House Conference on Families. He now serves on the board of Bread for the World, the National Religious Partnership for the Environment and the Catholic Health Association.
