The leader of the Tucson-based humanitarian group World Care was honored Friday by Gov. Janet Napolitano.
Lisa Hopper was recognized for her work helping Mississippi farmworkers who were left homeless and jobless by Hurricane Katrina.
World Care worked with the community development organization PPEP, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the Mississippi Farmworker Delta Council and the Alabama Telamon Farmworker Council to create a 55,000-square-foot emergency relief facility in Clarksdale, Miss.
The groups distributed 500 tons of supplies worth $1.2 million, in addition to $200,000 in cash relief. Hopper said many farmworkers did not receive help from FEMA or the Red Cross, and World Care continues to be involved in the region.
