Coachella goes green with clever incentivesTucson, Arizona | Published: 04.26.2007
Trends. How do I hate thee? I cannot begin to count the ways.
Dirty-and-faded-on-purpose jeans. Rap rock. Catty T-shirt slogans. Sanjaya's hair.
But SXSW (last month) and Coachella (this weekend) are leading the way with a trend that I can actually get on board with — environmentally conscious music festivals.
Coachella has come up with a few genius ideas to give fest-goers incentives to reduce their negative environmental impact.
Carpoolers who have a load of at least four people (and a sign that says "Carpoolchella" on their dash) have the chance to win free Coachella tickets for life. And I love this one: Anyone who brings 10 empty bottles to a vendor gets a free bottle of water.
Coachella gets points not only for being pro-recycling, but also for employing spectators as cleanup crews. On top of that, at a festival that is nestled in the rather toasty Mojave Desert, a free bottle of precious water is most welcome.
But wait . . . there's more! Behold: an energy station where you can ride a stationary bike to recharge your cell phone. Also: Enjoy food from an ethanol-powered barbecue (the proceeds go to an environmental charity) while gasping in amazement at the "wind- and solar-powered installations," all while rocking out to a biodiesel-powered DJ station.
And then, of course, you will drive home in your trendy Escalade.

Can't make it to Coachella?
You've got a few options.
You can watch the Webcast at attblueroom.com/events/ coachella.php. Or you can check out AZNightbuzz.com, where Adrienne Lake and Kevin W. Smith will be blogging from the festival. Or you could do both.
Rage Against the Machine reunites this weekend, while Björk, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, LCD Soundsystem, Interpol, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Willie Nelson all play the sunny festival in the California desert. We'll be there writing about it all.
