Women's Day benefit will aid community radio
Celebrate International Women's Day with some of Tucson's best female musicians performing at "Rapture: A Salute to Women Musicians."
Among the musicians on stage will be Mitzi Cowell, Amy Rude, Tammy West and Leila Lopez, who will perform music by female musicians they admire.
The show is a fund-raiser for community radio station KXCI (91.3-FM), and a suggested $5 donation will be collected at the door. The show is 7:30-10 tonight at Club Congress, 311 E. Congress St. 622-8848.
Brazilian singer performs at Berger Center Friday
Mônica Salmaso has been called one of the purest voices to come out of Brazil.
And now the young performer is coming to Tucson.
Touring off of her 2004 release, "Iaiá," Salmaso will make her Old Pueblo debut at the Berger Performing Arts Center on Friday.
The Rhythm & Roots performance will include Salmaso singing traditional Afro-Brazilian songs going back to her 1995 album "Afro Sambas."
See why Billboard magazine hailed Salmaso as a singer with "remarkable clarity" and a "formidable interpretive gift" at this 8 p.m. show. Tickets are $23 in advance through Antigone Books, CD City, Enchanted Earthworks and at www. rhythmandroots.org online; $25 at the door. 297-9133.
Rocker Eddie Money to play Desert Diamond
Show me the money.
Eddie Money, that is.
After late '70s rock and Top 40 hits such as "Baby Hold On," Money stayed current in the early '80s with his funky narrative MTV videos. But it was his platinum 1986 album "Can't Hold Back" that made him a true comeback kid with staying power. The album snagged him three Top 40 hits, starting with his "Take Me Home Tonight" duet with Ronnie Spector.
The rock icon brings his hits to Tucson at 7 p.m. Sunday at Desert Diamond Casino, 1100 W. Pima Mine Road.
Tickets to hear "Two Tickets to Paradise" will cost you $20, $25 and $35 in advance through Ticketmaster, 321-1000. Add $5 to the price if you plan to buy tickets the day of the show at the Desert Diamond Casino box office.
Float on over to Plush for shoegazer dream pop
Fans of My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain, take note — shoegazer dream pop is alive and well thanks to the High Violets.
"The High Violets essentially honor those who did it first while singing to their own tune. And they're equally enchanting in doing so," said the All Music Guide.
The Portland, Ore., band spins a dreamy web of ethereal electronic soundscapes on its 2002 debut "44 Down" and again on the new "To Where You Are." There are swirling guitar melodies and haunting vocals, but it all melds perfectly into a swirling sonic soup.
The band floats into Plush, 340 E. Sixth St., Saturday. Local indie band Lagoon opens at 10:45 p.m., with the High Violets taking stage an hour later. Tickets are $5. 798-1298.
