UA researchers will showcase some of their cutting-edge work during a new half-hour television show devoted to science on campus.
The show, known as "WaveLengths," will debut on Tuesday on KUAT, Channel 6, immediately following PBS' acclaimed science show "Nova."
Producers created the new show, which will run quarterly, in an effort to highlight some of the research on campus related to important international issues such as global food supply, disease and space exploration.
The show will take people inside high-tech laboratories, including work conducted at the Bio5 Institute, according to a news release.
The institute, founded in 2001, seeks to bring scientists from various backgrounds to work collaboratively on solving common scientific questions in fields such as plant biology and disease.
Vicki Chandler, Bio5's director, will serve as the host and narrator for the first episode of "WaveLengths."
Some of the research examined in the first episode includes attempts to produce "super rice" — a heartier strain of the crop that could help ease global demand — and work on disrupting mosquitoes' feeding cycle in an effort to stop the spread of diseases such as malaria.
"There is a lot of misinformation out there," Pamela K. White, producer of the first show, said in the news release. "I think the consensus is that we need to be more science-literate, especially with the major decisions we are facing today."
