Tucson, Arizona | Published: 05.06.2008
Age: 18
Parents' names: Teresa Andujar and James Riegert
Activities in school: One of Riegert's favorite things to do is work on cars, so it's no wonder that she's taking two automotive classes, in addition to English and American government. She also is a teacher's aide. English and advanced auto are her favorite classes.
"I know how to rebuild the front suspension (of a car)," she said. Riegert has picked up numerous other automotive skills and is a representative for Cholla's Auto Club.
Riegert also is involved in her school's Talent Search program, which introduces students to different colleges and careers.
Whom would you have lunch with if you could have lunch with anyone? Riegert wants to sit down at a Mexican restaurant with Sen. Barack Obama.
She voted for the first time in the February primary, and she'd use her lunch to try to understand what Obama is about and what he could do for the country.
Their meeting also would serve as a way to introduce Obama to Tucson and the Mexican culture, she said.
What books are you reading now? She's a fan of the "Vampire Huntress Legend" series by L.A. Banks and likes to read the series in her free time.
"It's different. It's something I've always been interested in. I've always read Anne Rice," she said about why she reads the series.
Whom do you admire most? Riegert most admires her mother, Teresa Andujar. She said she owes her strong morals to her mother and goes to her when she needs advice.
"She's a single parent. She's independent. She has a job. She has her own house. I look forward to being independent like her in the future," Riegert said.
Plans after high school: She likes to do nails and give other beauty treatments, and she's considering beauty college and then a job in a salon.
She also wants to take business courses at Pima Community College because she'd like to open her own salon eventually.
Dream job: "A doctor," she said. "Maybe later in my life."
Dermatology interests her.
Dream car: A yellow Lamborghini with butterfly doors. "It's sporty. It's fast. I like exotic sports cars," she said.
Favorite place in Tucson: Riegert likes to frequent Downtown because of the different environment and the interesting people.
Hidden talents: "I know how to knit and crochet," she said. "I can make blankets. I like to make little scarves."
Vouch: "She's a vivacious, enthusiastic student," Andujar said. "Whatever she sets her mind to, she accomplishes it. She is a natural leader.
"One thing I can say about Debra is she is full of spirit, and it's directed in the right places. It will take her places. She is an all-around great person who is respected by her peers and teachers."
● Student of the Week runs every Tuesday into May. In addition to being featured in the story, each student receives a plaque donated by Tuller Trophy and a certificate from the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent. If you'd like to nominate a deserving student, go to www.azstarnet.com/sn/ studentoftheweek and fill out the nomination form. Students also have to fill out a form. Both forms must be completed for us to consider students. Find links to past winners at the same site.
