Students from Pueblo Magnet High School are washing cars today to raise money for the family of a classmate who died of cancer last month.
The fundraiser begins at 9 a.m. at All Star-Window Tinting, 5025 S. 12th Ave. All proceeds will go to the father and sister of 17-year-old Ondria Chavez, who died Sept. 14.
Chavez should have been enjoying her senior year as president of the audiovisual club and mulling career options that combined her talents for fashion, interior design and technology. But over the summer she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She had Grade 3 anaplastic astrocytoma — a malignant tumor that kills most of its victims.
After her diagnosis, Chavez wrote on her MySpace page: "With this disease there are four grades so as you can imagine a grade 3 isn't looking so good."
Though she asked her MySpace friends to pray for a miracle, Chavez had no illusions about her prospects.
"I'm not afraid and have come to terms with what my future will hold," she wrote.
