Jessica Brewster, 10, raised $1,000 all by herself for Corbett Elementary School.

Tucson Region

Student of the week: Jessica Brewster

Corbett Elementary School, fifth grade
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.02.2007
Age: 10
Parents' names: John and Gloria Brewster
Activities in school: As Student Council president, Jessica starts each school day by raising the flag. She ends most of her days by supervising Student Council sales. The group sells pickles, popcorn and other goodies to raise money for new equipment at the school.
Math is Jessica's favorite class and she tutors classmates in division. She also plays the clarinet in the band and helps out in the library.
A big gift: Jessica devoted her summer to working odd jobs to raise money for her school. She collected cans, pulled weeds, watered plants, did housework and even sold her own belongings at a yard sale.
When the summer was over, she presented her school with $1,000.
"They were amazed," she said. "I wanted the money to go to supplies for teachers."
Activities outside of school: There is no shortage of things for Jessica to do after school.
She rides her bike, swims, hikes, searches for treasures with a metal detector and practices magic.
"I do different card tricks," she said. One of the more fascinating tricks up her sleeve is her ability to cut a rope in half and put it back together.
Who would you have lunch with if you could have lunch with anyone (living or dead)? Her best friend Robyn Webb, who moved to Alaska. After having a slice of pizza at Peter Piper Pizza, Jessica and Robyn would unearth the time capsule they buried when Robyn was still living in Tucson last year.
What book are you reading now? "Runaway Ralph" by Beverly Cleary. "It's a book about a mouse who rides a motorcycle," Jessica said.
Whom do you admire most? Her dad, John Brewster. "I think he's the coolest person in the world," she said.
Jessica and her dad are training to ride tandem in November's El Tour de Tucson.
"I pedal uphill. He pedals down," Jessica joked.
Future plans: After completing the fifth grade, middle school and finally high school, Jessica plans to attend college and study to become a doctor.
Dream car: The car was a must-have decades ago and Jessica might get to drive one in about six years.
Jessica's father owns a 1967 Mustang Fastback and he promised his daughter the car.
"It just needs to be fixed," she said. She wants to paint it black with a gray stripe down the middle.
Vouch: "She's just a terrific little girl," family friend Ellene Wallin said. "She just loves everybody."
