The Arizona Board of Regents will meet behind closed doors this morning to begin deliberating the selection of the next University of Arizona president, and could make a selection public by the end of the day.
Depending on progress in the executive session, the regents could follow that with a vote in a public meeting, though it has not yet been decided, said Anne Barton, a regents spokeswoman. The executive session is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Marvin D. "Swede" Johnson Building, 1111 N. Cherry Ave., Room 205.
There are four finalists for the UA presidency: Tom Campbell, dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley; Deborah A. Freund, vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost at Syracuse University; Yash P. Gupta, dean of the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California; and Robert N. Shelton, executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Three faculty groups and a universitywide advisory committee sent recommendations to the regents, indicating a preference for Shelton and Freund, in that order, said Wanda Howell, chair of the faculty and a nutritional sciences professor.
The Faculty Senate, the Committee of Eleven, Regents' professors and the Strategic Planning and Budget Advisory Committee all said the university needs leadership for both the internal and external aspects of the job and the two provosts are the better fits.
"It really did boil down to breadth of experience in the final faculty recommendation," Howell said.
UA student government leaders on Thursday sent a letter to the regents, recommending Campbell or Shelton for the post.
