PHOENIX — As the NL manager at the All-Star Game in July, Clint Hurdle created a Plan B in case the game went, oh, 15 innings.
After nine innings passed in a tie game, he reviewed his pitching options.
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Brandon Webb appeared unavailable because he had pitched two days earlier, but he volunteered.
"Let me go get my stuff," Webb told Hurdle and headed to the bullpen. He then struck out two in the scoreless 14th inning.
Hurdle recalled Webb's generous act when Hurdle's Colorado Rockies and the D-backs met last weekend in the final series of the season.
"You want to talk about old school. If you need a pitcher, you need a pitcher. I said, 'I just rubbed a magic genie, and you popped out,'" Hurdle recalled.
That is one reason Hurdle likes Webb for the NL Cy Young award. Webb and San Francisco right-hander Tim Lincecum are considered the favorites.
"I know there are a couple guys who woke up this morning thinking Brandon Webb's pitching. That's when you know a guy's had a good year. They know who's pitching," Hurdle said Saturday afternoon, when Webb made his final start, in a game between teams eliminated from playoff contention.
Complicating the argument about Webb-versus-Lincecum is that the two pitchers are so different. Lincecum uses well-trained mechanics to throw in the high-90s despite his 5-foot-11-inch, 170-pound stature. Webb, the 2006 Cy Young winner, induces groundout after groundout with his masterful sinker.
"I don't want to face either one," Rockies catcher Chris Iannetta said. "I don't think anyone does. Do you want to face a guy who throws 96 with a really good curveball or face a guy with the best sinker in the game and a great change-up to go with it?"
Lincecum supporters point out he has more strikeouts than Webb and a lower ERA. But Webb boasts four more victories on a team that won 10 more games than the Giants.
"I know Lincecum has the ERA, he has the strikeouts, but strikeouts aren't really a part of Webby's game," Arizona catcher Chris Snyder said. "Webby's game is being aggressive going after guys, working deep into the game."
Members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America have cast their votes for the Cy Young, and the results will be announced in November.
Until then, you be the judge. Review some of the stats and weigh the factors.
