Arizona trying to finish strongUpton, Tracy lift D-backs after sluggish start

PHOENIX — The electronic scoreboards above the left field pole were slow to light up Friday night at Chase Field. During the second inning, team names and game scores finally started to flicker on.
The Arizona Diamondbacks also were sluggish, but eventually warmed up to snap a three-game losing streak.
Out of playoff contention and no longer eyeing the scoreboard, the D-backs rallied from a three-run deficit and later snapped a tie to beat the Colorado Rockies 6-4.
With two outs and the game locked at 4 in the eighth inning, pinch hitter Chad Tracy smashed a two-run double off reliever Jason Grilli to right field. Miguel Montero had doubled and Jeff Salazar had walked with two outs.
"Next year, a healthy Chad Tracy could be a significant piece for us," manager Bob Melvin said, praising the left-handed batter's adjustment to pinch-hitting.
Chad Qualls entered in the ninth and retired all three batters he faced to earn his eighth save. He is 6 for 6 in save opportunities since he replaced Brandon Lyon as the closer on Sept. 12.
The series — and season —ends Sunday.
D-backs starter Dan Haren also overcame a weak start. After allowing three runs in the first inning, Haren settled into a groove.
He allowed four runs and struck out nine in seven innings, raising his season total to a career-high 206. His previous best was 192 last season with Oakland.
Haren, who threw 109 pitches called the first inning "flukey."
"My stuff was really good, better than it had been the last couple times," he said. He noted that first baseman Adam Dunn might have thrown the ball from the 200th strikeout into the stands.
Juan Cruz (4-0) replaced Haren to start the eighth inning with the score tied 4-4, preventing Haren from earning his 17th victory.
The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the NL West on Thursday, sealing the D-backs' fate a year after they won the division and advanced to the NL Championship Series.
Melvin said he will refrain from making major lineup changes in the final days of the season because he wants his club to finish strong. All the regulars started except center fielder Chris Young, who was scratched because of "puffiness" in a knee, and catcher Chris Snyder.
The Rockies, meanwhile, sat most of their starters.
In his first major league start of the season, Colorado's Jason Hirsh allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings.
The Rockies scored three runs in the first inning. Troy Tulowitzki drove in a run on a double. Brad Hawpe then scored Tulowitzki on a double.
Garrett Atkins grounded out to catcher Miguel Montero, but no one covered home plate, allowing Hawpe to score from second.
The D-backs rallied on a home run by Justin Upton — his 15th — to lead off the fourth inning and another solo shot by Stephen Drew — his 21st — in the fifth.
Upton delivered a two-out, two-run triple in the fifth to give Arizona a 4-3 lead.
Colorado's Joe Koshansky tied the game 4-4 on a pinch-hit double in the seventh.
Inside pitch
● MLB.com reported backup catcher Montero could see time at third base during the offseason. He has been fielding groundballs during batting practice. A move could potentially allow third baseman Mark Reynolds to play second base. Montero said he doesn't want to lower his value as a catcher but wants to help the club.
● Rockies manager Clint Hurdle was ejected in the eighth after arguing when Tulowitzki was called out trying to steal second. It was Hurdle's second ejection of the season.
● Colorado's Matt Holliday was scratched from the lineup because of a stiff lower back.
