Baseball

NL inside pitch

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.04.2008
• Major League Baseball's scoring review committee ruled Wednesday that official scorer Bob Webb did not err when he decided that Pittsburgh's Andy LaRoche singled against Brewers pitcher C.C. Sabathia in the bottom of the fifth inning of Milwaukee's 7-0 win Sunday. If the call had been reversed, it would have been the second no-hitter in Brewers history after Juan Nieves' performance on April 15, 1987, in a 7-0 win against Baltimore. Sabathia tried to make a barehanded pickup of LaRoche's softly hit grounder, but dropped it. Webb immediately ruled it a hit. The committee ruled Wednesday that Webb's judgment was not "clearly erroneous," which is the standard set forth in Official Scoring Rule 10.01(a), and did not meet the criteria for reversal.
• Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar left Wednesday's game in the fourth inning because of an injured left shoulder. On the play, he stepped on his left hand stumbling out of the box after a single. The Braves said Escobar is day-to-day.
• The Brewers stranded 26 runners while being swept by the Mets in a three-game series that ended Wednesday.
• Braves manager Bobby Cox extended his major-league ejection record to 143, getting tossed in the fifth inning for arguing balls and strikes. It was the eighth time this season he was ejected. Cox, 67, is in his 27th season as a manager. Hall of Fame manager John McGraw is second in ejections with 131.
• Wednesday's attendance at Dolphin Stadium, where the Marlins hosted the Braves, was officially listed as 11,211, based on tickets sold, but estimates put the actual crowd size at around 600.
