• Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano, who has just one win in his last five starts and failed to get past the fifth inning in two of them, has a tired arm. He will pitch the series finale against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies today. Zambrano went through a similar experience last season when he went winless in August and had a drop-off in velocity. "He doesn't have a sore arm, and he doesn't have a dead arm. He might have a little bit of a tired arm. It's muscular," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. Zambrano said he has eased up during his sessions between starts with more long tosses, has no pain and is OK.
• Chipper Jones is hoping his ailing right elbow won't stop him from winning his first batting title. He was leading the majors with a .358 average entering the Braves' game against the Nationals on Saturday night despite a series of injuries this season. His biggest problem lately has been a balky right elbow. "It's really, really painful," said Jones, saying it's not a structural problem.
• Struggling Florida Marlins closer Kevin Gregg says he's taking a break to rest a sore left knee that has bothered him the past three or four weeks. The ailment wasn't previously disclosed. Gregg is 0-4 in his past seven outings with a 16.20 ERA.
• The New York Mets and Marlins poured onto the field in the second inning Saturday after Mike Pelfrey hit Florida's Cody Ross on the arm with a pitch. Ross slammed his protective gear to the ground as he walked to first base, then shouted profanities at Pelfrey. When the players took a couple of steps toward each other, both benches emptied. No punches were thrown, and no one was ejected. Pelfrey picked off Ross to end the inning.
