• The Los Angeles Dodgers sent rookie Clayton Kershaw to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday but said he is still scheduled to take his turn in the rotation next week. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers purchased the contract of lefty reliever Scott Elbert from Double-A Jacksonville. Elbert was 4-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 25 games. The left-handed Kershaw is 2-5 with a 4.56 ERA in 16 starts. He's expected to return to the Dodgers to start Tuesday against San Diego.

• The San Diego Padres placed outfielder Scott Hairston, a Canyon del Oro High School graduate, on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a torn ligament in his left thumb. The Padres also recalled right-handed reliever Cla Meredith from Triple-A Portland, and purchased the contracts of right-hander Josh Geer and outfielder Will Venable from the Beavers.
• The Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays were working Friday to complete a trade that would send veteran left-handed hitter Matt Stairs to the Phillies. Neither Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi nor Phillies GM Pat Gillick would confirm that the trade was official. But Stairs, who can play the outfield or first base, told The Canadian Press he was on his way to Philadelphia.
