• Josh Beckett was put on the 15-day disabled list because of an inflamed right elbow, and manager Terry Francona said he hopes the Boston Red Sox ace can return to the rotation Friday in Texas. Beckett was examined by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola., Fla., on Friday. "I don't trust anybody more than I trust him when it comes to stuff like that," Beckett said. … He said my ligament looked fine. That's what I was afraid of. … It was a big relief." Beckett was scheduled to pitch Friday night's opener of the three-game series with the White Sox but was scratched Thursday.
• Finally back after missing more than 2 1/2 months with an injured right elbow, Cleveland catcher Victor Martinez was activated from the 15-day DL and started at first base as the streaking Indians opened a three-game series Friday night against the Mariners. The two-time All-Star had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow on June 13. Martinez, who came into the season with a .301 career average, was batting .278 with no home runs and 21 RBIs in 54 games before the Indians placed him on the disabled list.

Cabrera, 8-8 with a 5.24 ERA in 28 starts, also was fined for throwing a pitch at Rodriguez's head in the eighth inning of a game on July 29.
• Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera left Friday's game against the Royals because of a mild strain of his left pectoral muscle.
• Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora left Friday's game against Tampa Bay because of a strained left hamstring.
